Bioinformatics Apprentice - IT

Salary £17,489 per annum plus benefits 

4 year apprenticeship

We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate individual to join the Genome Reference Informatics Team as an Apprentice whilst working towards gaining a fully funded BSc (Hons) Bioinformatics Degree Apprenticeship at Anglia Ruskin University CLICK HERE

You will have the opportunity to develop in the area of IT and Bioinformatics, gaining valuable skills whilst making an important contribution to the institute and its Darwin Tree of Life Project which will decipher the genetic code of all life in the British Isles. You will be given the appropriate training and learn from our experienced team where you will go on to:

  • Help generating genome assemblies for the Darwin Tree of Life Project
  • Manage and assess big data for our genome sequencing projects
  • Assist in the development and running of pipelines and processes to further improve assemblies
  • Interact with our on-site scientists and informaticians as they tackle tomorrow’s scientific challenges

About us: 

Our team is responsible for: Assembly generation, assessment and improvement as well as data management and assisting collaborators in the interpretation of genomic data. You will be involved in all key activities, with the intention to develop and take on more responsibilities as your knowledge and skills grow.

Essential Skills

  • 112 UCAS points or equivalent
  • A level Grade B (or equivalent) in at least one STEM subject, Maths desirable.
  • At least 4 GCSE’s at Grade B/Grade 6 which must include Maths and English
  • If English is not your first language, you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent
  • An interest in science and technology
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Enthusiastic, flexible and proactive
  • Ability to learn to deal with changing priorities
  • Desire to work within and contribute to a team
  • Eager to learn new skills

Ideal Skills

  • Some experience with Linux command line creating, renaming, moving, deleting files and manually editing files in a text editor
  • Some knowledge of genomics (e.g. spare time reading of articles, journals and introductory materials etc.)
