The Opportunity:

The Teichmann lab is seeking a senior or principal (depending on experience) bioinformatician to work under the supervision of Kerstin Meyer, the Principal Investigator of the Lung Cell Atlas.

About the Principal Bioinformatian Role: 

You will lead/ coordinate an exciting research project constructing a transcriptomic map of germ cells and gametes across the lifespan. Your primary activities will be to: i) coordinate the project with project partners and team members; 

     I.        analyse single cell and spatial transcriptomics data to characterise the cell states present in the tissue and their communication at different developmental and adult stages and suggested validation strategies to confirm your findings;

    II.        support and participate in the development of new computational methods to study cellular communication and gene regulatory networks from single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data

 About the Senior Bioinformatician Role:

You will plan a programme of research that is original but fits within the general research (Lung Cell Atlas) area of the team, taking into account the relevant literature, own experience, and advice from the team leader and other appropriate scientists.

About Us:

To perform this research, we make use of state-of-the-art technological advances, such as (but not limited to): single cell transcriptomics and chromatin accessibility sequencing, spatial transcriptomics and whole genome sequencing. We have access to extensive collections of sample repositories through collaboration with local and international groups. We are significant contributors to the Human Cell Atlas and the Human Developmental Cell Atlas projects, an international project to systematically map all cells in the body across the lifespan.

You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to build collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

Essential Skills

Principal Bioinformatician:

  • PhD in relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. Computational Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Physics, Engineering or Mathematics)
  • Proven understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, data processing and high-throughput data analysis 
  • Data handling skills 
  • Critical and analytic thinking around problems 
  • Excellent experience programming in high level scripting languages (preferably R or python)
  • Record of high quality research publications 
  • Excellent communication skills to allow efficient interactions with collaborators/team members
  • Proficient Experience of writing manuscripts for publication 
  • Highly developed problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to anticipate needs and problems while creating solutions 
  • Demonstrable good time management and project management skills 
  • Supervisory Experience 

 

Senior Bioinformatician:

Other information

Whilst the developments around COVID-19 continue to evolve, the Wellcome Genome Campus is closed for all but essential functions and facilities. 

People remain at the centre of everything that we do and the majority of our staff are now working remotely to ensure continuity of operations, making use of remote communication and collaboration tools.
