Research Assistant

Here at the world-famous and internationally respected Wellcome Sanger Institute, we have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join our MalariaGEN Service Delivery team, where we build and share large genomic data resources to study malaria epidemiology.

About the Role

As Research Assistant, you will:

  • Ensure efficient processing of over 20,000 samples across 100s of projects per annum from numerous malaria endemic countries around the world.
  • Manage the shipping and receipt of samples for both Plasmodium and Anopheles genome surveillance activities, ensuring all compliance, safety and customs requirements are met.

About the Team:

We are a passionate team valuing collaborative working to build and share large genomic data resources to study malaria epidemiology. Our team oversee the receipt of samples from across the globe, processing on arrival and tracking through central systems. We provide support and expertise to both internal projects as well as those in the wider MalariaGEN network, in Low-to-Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). Our mission is to support and influence local and global health organisations in their surveillance activities to achieve well-informed, impactful and sustainable interventions. 

MalariaGEN is moving towards a new Global Surveillance model to deliver a professional and efficient service for the genomic surveillance of malaria parasites and vectors to National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs) in malaria endemic countries. The Service Delivery team is responsible for the delivery of the end-to-end service, producing high quality data products and surveillance reports, at scale, in a timely manner and at a low cost. Recently, the team has expanded the genomic surveillance service to support the national response to the covid-19 pandemic.
