About You

You are an experienced certified scrum master, with demonstrable success delivering digital services in a complex technology domain through modern software practices. We use automated testing and CI/CD pipelines to deploy services through infrastructure as code to private & public cloud environments.

You are a competent servant leader with practical experience of employing the values of commitment, focus, openness, respect, and courage to create feedback cycles, remove ambiguity, promptly address team dysfunction and celebrate improvement and delivery.

You have a clear understanding of one or more of the agile family of techniques from Scrum, XP, Kanban, Lean, Impact mapping, Systems thinking or coaching, combining these to support teams to iteratively deliver quality software products and tools. We predominately use Scrum and Kanban.

You are confident mixing verbal and visual communication techniques to promote a shared understanding of goals. You will identify and remove impediments and clarify business requirements supporting our product owners, collaborating with senior stakeholders to transparently communicate progress on a daily basis

You are an experienced hybrid worker. You are confident collaborating in person on-site or through electronic tools when remote-working. You find innovative and creative ways to bring people together and build a positive culture. We use tools including Gitlab, Zoom, Slack Miro, and index cards and whiteboards when in person through a typical sprint cycle.

You have a curious mind eager to understand the changing nature of work at Sanger and the courage to ask questions when you don’t understand. You will begin to learn the scientific domain in your first week through regular contact with Product Owners, Scientists, Bioinformaticians and our partners. This study never stops.

About Us

The Surveillance Operations team is part of a scientific network that connects researchers, clinicians, and global health leaders across the globe with cutting-edge DNA sequencing technologies and genomic research. Through a number of multi-centre projects, we provide a framework for generating, integrating and sharing genetic and genomic data, and for investigating key questions about COVID-19, malaria biology and epidemiology. These frameworks and proof of concept software developments are also the base for supporting genomic surveillance operations across various contexts going into the future.

As part of the MalariaGEN initiative delivering its current commitment under a grant provided by the Gates Foundation, the Business Systems Team within Surveillance Operations have built a solution to support the tracking and management of malaria studies and their associated samples. This solution allows global partners to register studies, send Sanger samples for DNA sequencing, along with their associated metadata, and one which enables the tracking and management of these samples through a complex process at the institute with the results being data released to partners and the public.

In addition to this, the Business Systems and Data Engineering team have also delivered a similar solution for the tracking of COVID-19 samples, which are currently being sent to the institute for DNA sequencing. The Business Systems and Data Engineering team within Surveillance Operations continues to focus on the continuous improvement and development of these software applications going forward as well as producing other proof of concept software products in line with the Surveillance Operations strategy.
