Research Assistant - Teichmann Group

Salary Range: £18,422 to £23,027 plus excellent benefits.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute conducts cutting edge genomic research on an unprecedented scale and our laboratory teams play a vital role in enabling and supporting our science.

The Teichmann Group is currently looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and technically skilled Research Assistant to carry out both routine and more bespoke laboratory protocols and procedures including: RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, SMART-Seq2, NGS library preparation. Training will be provided when necessary.

Working as part of the dynamic multi-disciplinary team, they will be helping to provide laboratory solutions and support in diverse projects.

The successful candidate will be able to work independently, have good communication skills and interact well with the both the team and senior staff.

They will be expected to take a collaborative and pragmatic approach when planning the work schedules in order to prioritise effectively.

Essential Skills

  • Biological degree with laboratory experience
  • Good Laboratory Practice
  • Prior experience of using common PC packages Excel/Word
  • Good understanding and experience of relevant molecular biology techniques
  • Ability to organise own workload 
  • Ability to work independently and within a group but be able to recognise when to seek help 
  • Ability to keep good records
  • Ability to work to a schedule and successfully manage and prioritise multiple competing projects
  • Good understanding of laboratory Health and Safety issues 
  • Adaptability to changing priorities & workloads, and learning new skills

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
