Senior Staff Scientist - Germ Free/Gnotobiotic Facility

Salary range: £43182 to £52250pa plus excellent benefits.

Fixed term for 3 years

We are seeking a talented, motivated and experienced Senior Staff Scientist at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, under the leadership of Dr Trevor Lawley (  We are expanding the germ free/gnotobiotic capability for controlled-microbiome studies, and are looking for a Senior Staff Scientist to work closely with Dr Trevor Lawley and other members of the Sanger Institute, to provide operational and scientific leadership.

This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to join a dynamic team investigating the role of the microbiota in human health and a variety of diseases, such as autoimmunity, infections and cancers, using genomics, microbiology and model organisms. There is a strong translational focus to the Lab with the goal of developing novel, microbiome based diagnostics and therapeutics.

The successful applicant will have experience in designing and executing mouse experiments and managing mouse colonies.  Key responsibilities include, facilitating and building a strong host-microbiota interactions programme to build on the current understanding of the interactions with disease areas such as cancer, immune system modulation, and infection. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary, collaborative team and will be expected to work closely with existing team members to accomplish scientific objectives and proactively identify, establish and develop new collaborations and new projects and publications.

You will have substantial opportunities for learning and development, working closely with informaticians, wet-lab biologists, Postdoctoral Fellows and PhD students.

Essential Skills


  • PhD with strong background in mouse immunology, genetics, infections or cancer
  • Demonstrated research experience, such as publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Holder of a Home Office Personal Licence or an equivalent licence outside the UK
  • Experience of planning research projects
  • Experience writing COSHH assessments and Biological Risk Assessments
  • Supervisory experience including training and guiding others
  • Ability to organise own workload and that of team
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Team player with ability to effectively prioritise, multi-task and work independently
  • Ability to review, synthesise, and present scientific data and methods
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated track record of analysing and interpreting large datasets and delivering complex scientific projects through to publication
  • Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail
  • Experience presenting to outside groups
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, particularly with scientific users
  • Effective communicator with wide range of persons of differing levels, abilities and knowledge

  • Experience of working with Germ Free Models
  • Resource management experience and expertise
  • Demonstrable ability to operate and influence at senior management level
  • Laboratory Containment Level 2 experience
