Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Expert - Genome Research LTD EDI Forum
We are looking for an external expert in EDI to provide strategic advice, support and guidance to ensure that we are meeting our aims and objectives in our EDI GRL forum (this includes Sanger and Connecting Science.)
The individual will:
- Input into shaping our EDI priorities
- Challenge our way of working and interrogate our data
- Highlight opportunities and innovative practice in EDI
GRL has been a member of the Athena SWAN Charter since 2013, and we had our Bronze Award renewed in 2016.
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Forum was set-up in 2017 and leads on a broader programme of work that addresses equality issues at their source.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Forum –terms of reference
The EDI Forum has the following responsibilities:
- To provide long-term support and strategic leadership and be the organisational champion for equality diversity and inclusion
- To ensure compliance with equality and diversity legislation and ensure that EDI issues are a key consideration in the development and implementation of policy and processes
- To monitor the outcomes of policy and processes and recommend appropriate remedial measures
- To oversee the implementation and monitor progress of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Objectives, holding accountable key stakeholders for delivery of the plan in their respective areas
- To raise the level of awareness and active engagement of staff in diversity and equality matters
- To make recommendations to the Athena SWAN Operational Group.
Change and improvements are demonstrated and evidenced though staff surveys, focus groups and staff data.
Membership of the EDI Forum encompasses staff with a broad range of experiences and responsibilities, including the Director, senior management and staff at different levels across the organisation.
The Forum meets twice a year.
We anticipate a commitment from members to attend 2 half day meetings a year with an additional 1-2 days commitment for emails or teleconferences. Members will be reimbursed for travel and subsistence and in addition, paid an honoraria fee for attendance at meetings. We will pay 4 days honorarium/year at up to £700 per day (depending on skills and experience)

- Experience of leading on EDI initiatives/research in, either a corporate, public sector or an academic setting
- Knowledge of the impact of the intersection of multiple identities leading to inequality
- Knowledge of social science research on EDI issues
- Understanding of qualitative approaches to gathering EDI data/information
- Understanding of the different methodologies to drive organisational workplace inclusivity
- Knowledge of EDI legislation - understanding of the effects of discrimination on grounds of e.g. age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation
- Large network of contacts in the area of EDI
