Staff Scientist - Mouse Genome Engineering
Salary in the region of £36,000 to £40,000 depending on experience, plus benefits
We are seeking a talented, self-motivated and flexible Staff Scientist to join the Mouse Pipelines Genome Engineering group (GE).
The Sanger Mouse Pipelines Genome Engineering group (GE) generates custom mutations in mice by gene targeting in mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells and directly in the mouse zygote by applying cutting-edge gene editing technology. GE creates mutant alleles of interest to Sanger Institute Faculty, to study basic biology in the mouse, to model and modulate human biology, genetics, and disease pathology. While our efforts benefit from existing targeting vector/ES cell modular resources generated by the KOMP, EUCOMM, and EUCOMMTOOLs projects, we have successfully implemented, and routinely use, CRISPR/Cas9 to produce mutant alleles in both mESC and directly in the mouse zygote. As part of our research and development (R&D) plan we continually seek to investigate and employ the latest gene editing technology to improve the efficiency of zygote HDR generated mouse mutants.
- You will have demonstrable track record in the conceptual design, implementation and execution of complex strategies to manipulate the mouse genome.
- You will possess exceptional theoretical and practical skills in both molecular and stem cell biology.
- Your main responsibilities will be the design, production and management of workflows for the generation of targeting vectors, CRISPR/Cas9 targeting reagents and the generation and validation of quality assured targeted mES cells.
- You will be supported by two Advanced Research Assistants and be responsible for their day to day activities. In addition, you will also be expected to train and support other less experienced members of the group and troubleshoot across multiple projects.
- In line with our R&D commitment to create complex alleles directly in the mouse zygote via gene editing, you will be expected to keep abreast of, and validate where appropriate, the latest developments in the field genome engineering. This work will contribute to the strategic operation and future direction of the GE team.
Some weekend cell culture is anticipated in this role.
- PhD or BSc with proven track record/experience at equivalent level.
- Highly experienced in the design and implementation of gene targeting technologies to manipulate the mouse genome, with a proven track record in the execution of such technologies.
- Extensive understanding of both molecular biology and tissue culture, coupled with experience in a broad range of practical techniques in these areas.
- Theoretical understanding and practical experience in the use and development of nuclease assisted genome engineering.
- Experience in developing new protocols and modifying existing protocols to meet bespoke requirements.
- Experience in the performing genotyping assays and analysing genotyping data.
- Ability to interpret complex scientific data and troubleshoot over a diversity of issues.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills in managing competing priorities in a busy environment.
- Extensive experience in the use of genome browsers, DNA sequence and protein analysis databases and DNA manipulation/analysis programs for the in silico design of complex gene targeting strategies.
- A high level of interpersonal and communications skills.
- A collaborative nature; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build good internal and external working relationships
- Computer literate: Microsoft Office programmes including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to work as part of a team, but also the ability to operating with a high level of independence.
- Experience in the direct day to day management of staff and their training, development and appraisal.
- Experience in project tracking, results reporting and monitoring individual/group performance.
- Experience of LIMS computer program.
