Advanced Research Assistant - Cellular Generation and Phenotyping
Salary range £26,693 to £32,299 per annum depending on experience, plus benefits
An opportunity has arisen for a talented cell biology specialist to support the Cellular Generation and Phenotyping team (CGaP) here at the Sanger Institute. You will be working as a part of a team on induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) differentiation into neuronal lineages using both wild type and knock out iPSCs.

We are a core facility, responsible for providing cell biology resource and expertise to the wider institute. We do this by running multiple, diverse, high throughput projects for various faculty teams from across the Sanger Institute. Our current portfolio of projects includes genome wide CRISPR screens, iPSC derivation and differentiation, organoid derivation, The Human Cell Atlas Initiative and the generation of Plasmodium mutants. We work closely as a team of Senior Scientific Managers, Research Assistants and Faculty members to successfully deliver large scale projects.
As an Advanced Research Assistant you will play a fundamental role in expansion, banking and differentiation of iPSCs into neural stem cells and terminally differentiated neurons. Working in partnership with faculty teams you will enable the project to run at scale. The role requires you to aid in the tracking and progress of project to ensure a high quality of work and see the project through to completion.
Here at CGaP you will be part of an experienced team of enthusiastic, highly motivated Research Assistants, under the management of a Senior Scientific Manager. Your role will include the culture and manipulation of iPSCs in the lab, co-ordinate the transfer of samples to and from the faculty team, troubleshoot issues, identify areas for process improvement as well as training more junior staff.
In addition to the lab work we expect our Advanced Research Assistants to have strong time management and organisational skills and be excellent communicators. As a department we strive to work together where possible to build a culture of continuous process improvement. We also expect and support all staff to take part in department and institute wide initiatives.

- Degree in Biological Sciences, or equivalent qualification
- Relevant laboratory experience
- Extensive experience working with primary tissues and/or cell lines
- Prior experience of running tissue or primary cell based assays or antibody staining techniques
- Ability to troubleshoot and process improve
- Experience in collaborating with others and effectively working in teams
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Computer literate
- Ability to keep good up-to-date records with attention to detail
- Ability to test and implement new approaches and techniques into new SOPs
- Ability to work to a schedule and successfully manage and prioritise multiple competing tasks
- Proven experience of working within a team
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Experience of training others
- Experience of neuronal iPSC differentiation
