Advanced Research Assistant - Vento Faculty, Cellular Genetics

Salary in the region of £26,960 - £32,622 (dependent on experience) plus excellent benefits

Fixed term for 18 Months

The Vento-Tormo Group is currently looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and technically skilled Advanced Research Assistant depending on experience to work in the MRC-Human cell atlas funded female reproductive atlas (

You will carry out both routine and more bespoke laboratory protocols and procedures including but not limited to: RNA/DNA NGS library preparation; tissue dissociation techniques and spatial transcriptomics methods. Training will be provided when necessary. The Wellcome Sanger Institute conducts cutting edge genomic research on an unprecedented scale and our laboratory teams play a vital role in enabling and supporting our science.

Working as part of the dynamic multi-disciplinary team the selected candidate will be helping to provide laboratory solutions and support in diverse projects.

You will be able to work independently, have good communication skills and interact well with the team. You will be expected to take a collaborative and pragmatic approach when planning the work schedules in order to prioritise effectively.

Essential Skills

  • Biological degree with relevant laboratory experience
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to keep good records 
  • Good sample management; tracking, labelling and storage of samples
  • Experience in histology
  • Significant experience of core molecular biology techniques, including sample handling, PCR, RNA/DNA purification, library prep and similar
  • Good Laboratory Practice
  • Ability to test and implement new approaches and techniques
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to work to a schedule and successfully manage and prioritise multiple competing projects
  • Ability to organise own workload
  • Ability to work independently and within a group but be able to recognise when to seek help

Ideal Skills

  • Experience working with human tissue samples / Human Tissue Act
  • Experience in fluorescent microscopy
  • Experience in histology (in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry)
  • Knowledge of single-cell sequencing technologies
  • Experience in immune cell assays such as FACS
  • Experience with protocols relevant to genomics of gene expression and gene regulation including chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), and ATAC-seq
  • Experience of automation for NGS library construction
  • Supervisory Skills
